Prof. Dr. Ivars Kalvinsh

Member of the Council of Advisors President of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis. Dr. hab.S chem., professor, full member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, full member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis, Head of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry since 1992 and Head of the Laboratory of Chemistry of Carbofunctional Compounds. Officer of the Order of the Three Stars and recipient of many other awards.

Main directions of scientific research: search for physiologically active substances in the line of synthetic analogues of natural amino acids, chemistry of heterocyclic compounds, development of medical preparations in the field of CNS, cardiovascular, anticancer and immunomodulators, studies of molecular mechanisms of action of pharmacologically active substances, biological mechanisms of immunomodulation.  Prof. Kalviņš is the author of an original anti-ischemic preparation (mildronate) and an immunostimulant (leakadin), as well as new original pharmaceutical compositions containing mildronate
